Can’t find fridge drain pan or user manual?
Hi,
hope someone can help cos I'm totally haunted by the real bad smell coming from my fridge. Tried defrosting, cleaning, leaving overnight open/switched off and baking soda. Nothing's worked and I can smell the smell (like spoiled milk) all the time.
It's a fridge freezer with the fridge on top. I want to find where the drain pan is, I've took the bottom front bit off but there's nothing there so I assume it's at the back somewhere. I've had a look, but there doesn't seem to be anything which will come off easily so don't want to pull anything.
I don't have the manual but on the front of the fridge it says Zanussi Freezone ZFK - 61/27R. I can't find this make/model anywhere.
I would really appreciate any help, or some kind words telling me I'm not going mad (maybe I am, lol) I'm thinking maybe the smell is no longer there and I'm imagining it, who knows.
Any way, many thanks, Linda
Thanks for the answers, much appreciated. I've found the manual online, it has a defrost tray above the compressor and it's fixed (I think) It's not a new purchase Fridge doctor, my dad gave it to me when he got a new one. This was couple of yrs ago and the smell only started recently. I say it smells like spoiled milk but it's sort of like cheese as well. The smell is more at the back of the fridge. The drainage tube isn't blocked as I poured a little water down. Nothing's been spilled inside freezer. Nothing has died underneath the fridge or the cooker (next to it) I can't smell anything until I open the fridge door.
Cheers anyway

If you have a newer fridge there will not be a pan, the fridge evaporates the moisture, um you can try blowing out the coils on the bottom, but a milk smell is very weird. I have had a mouse killed by the pump motor once did you check that?
best I can find is this…..
right below the two ads in purple, there’s one that says, “any questions, email me”….. I’d do that….!!!…. *smile*……….ya never know where you might find your best help….
Linda, have you been able to pinpoint where the odor originates? Does it smell on the inside or the outside? More at the top or at the bottom? The front or the back?
First of all, no matter how old or new the fridge is, there IS a defrost condensate pan at the bottom near the compressor and condenser fan motor, if your model has a fan. However, if this is a newer model, the pan is likely permanently affixed to the base of the fridge, or bolted to the top of the compressor if there is no fan. Unlike older units that were manual defrost, in which case you would have a lot of water each time you defrosted, newer models mount the pans since there is less water each time it goes into defrost, and therefore less time is needed to evaporate this smaller amount, so it became unneccessary to remove the pan. Also, it is rare for the pan itself, or the water in it, to cause any odors. Check around the compressor, underneath it, for any little creatures that may have expired, a very warm home to more than a few mice I’ve encountered on my service calls, and once found a dead bird that was quite determined to get warm.
YOu dont mention if this is a new purchase or older model, and if it is new was this smell from the beginning. In either case, was milk, or anythign else, spilled inside? Was there a not-cooling issue at any time? Often times my customers have a not-cooling issue, yet they leave the food inside despite the fact it is 60 degrees in there, and with the doors closed a non-working fridge can and does smell very bad. If there was, did ice cream melt in freezer and spill on floor of freezer. It is possible to clean up spills inside unit, but still not clean everything. There could be something in places such as air flow vents which are lined with styrofoam, that even if you clean your entire fridge, (ALWAYS using a non fragrant cleaner, i.e. bleach, which will permanently permeat in the air inside the unit, and all over your food), it is possible for the odor to embed in the styrofoam, making it difficult to entirely remove the offending odor.
If something was spilled inside, it might become necessary to have a reputable repair technician take apart your freezer to inspect that which you cannot see, so you dont damage that which you should not have taken apart.
